Uncertainty isn’t just something we’re all feeling—it’s actually being tracked. The number of times it’s mentioned in major media has doubled over the past three months, echoing the shifts many of us are sensing.
If you’ve been feeling it too, you’re not alone. Rather than getting swept up in the noise, this is a moment to step back, gain perspective, and focus on what’s within your control. In this post, I’m offering tools and perspectives to help you stay steady and lead with confidence—even when the path ahead feels unclear.
Recognizing the Moment
For many, this is a time of transition. Some feel secure in their roles yet still wonder: What’s going on? Others are navigating job shifts, team changes, or the ripple effects of political and industry-wide disruption.
Conversations—whether in workplaces, communities, or personal circles—reflect the evolving landscape.
These are the moments when steady, values-driven leadership matters most. It’s not about titles—it’s about showing up with presence and providing stability as the future unfolds.
The Leadership Window Is Open
There’s no way to predict exactly what’s ahead, but there is a window of opportunity for leaders to ground themselves in the midst of uncertainty.
Even if challenges don’t escalate, taking time now to check your footing and clarify your direction strengthens your ability to be a steady, trustworthy, and agile presence—for teams, clients, and communities.
Gallup, known for its leadership and workplace engagement research, has identified four fundamental elements that help people thrive. I regularly integrate these into my work with clients—and they feel especially relevant right now.
TRUST – Creating a foundation of reliability, honesty, and follow-through that fosters confidence.
COMPASSION – Being genuinely curious about others’ challenges, listening, relating, and offering meaningful support.
STABILITY – Providing a reassuring, steady presence that’s comfortable with the unknown, helping others navigate with confidence.
HOPE – Inspiring optimism by holding a compelling vision for the future and helping others see possibility beyond the present moment.
Leadership in Challenging Times
Think back to March 2020—the start of the global pandemic.
During the turbulence:
- Some leaders created stability when teams were sent home to work remotely.
- Others provided clarity and hope even when the path forward was unclear.
- Some organizations struggled, leaving employees feeling disconnected and uncertain.
The leaders who built trust, provided stability, showed compassion, and created hope during that time weren’t just offering support in the moment—they were shaping long-term success.
The Inside-Out Approach: It Starts with YOU
Before you can lead others effectively, it helps to pause, reflect, and center yourself. I encourage you to take five minutes to consider how you’re showing up in each of these four leadership areas. Where do you naturally shine—and where might you want to focus?
TRUST: Confidence and courage aren’t about having all the answers—they come from trusting your ability to learn, adapt, and pivot.
Do I trust my ability to navigate whatever comes next? Can I rely on my decision-making and discernment?
COMPASSION: Leaders allow themselves space to think, process, be supported, and grow.
How do I talk to myself in challenging moments? Am I offering myself the same understanding and patience I extend to others?
STABILITY: Built on structures, habits, and boundaries that create consistency in uncertain times. It’s about how you show up—regardless of the circumstances.
Do I keep my word to myself and others? What’s one thing I can do to create greater stability for my future?
HOPE: A mindset that allows for positive expectation, even in challenge—so you can recognize opportunity and inspire possibility.
Am I consciously surrounding myself with people and influences that lift my perspective? What vision am I holding for the future?
✎ Reflection & Conversation:
- Which of these four areas—Trust, Compassion, Stability, or Hope—feels most relevant to you right now?
- Where do you feel strong in your leadership? Where is there room for growth?
